How might we make travelling with babies easier and more comfortable?

A changing bag that is more than just an accessory

Changing your baby can be quite a hassle when on the go. The Napper bag I designed for Kipkep solves this problem by combining a bag and a changing mat. By easily unfolding the outer layer of the bag there is always a soft surface for your baby to lay on. Consumers can purchase the Napper bag online and in more than 150 selected stores all over Europe. The design was awarded the Baby Innovation Award in 2018.

The Kipkep Napper was designed after two weeks of user research in which I mapped out habits, wishes and needs of moms and dads. Insights from the research showed that changing a baby on the go was frustrating for many parents. Parents often found a changing bag unstylish, too colourful, and not 'daddy-like' enough and they also found it difficult to bring a changing or playing mat while travelling.

Madelon during the research:

"I've always had trouble with products that were made specifically for mothers. The ‘mommy bike’, the 'diaper bag’: as if all mothers love flowers and crazy colours.” - Madelon

The Napper bag was designed to make travelling with babies easier by combining a changing bag and a mat in a stylish way. After I produced the first prototype to test the concept, the prototype evolved into a sellable product together with the Dutch baby brand Kipkep.

After the first design was awarded the Baby Innovation Award 2018, a second version was launched to market focusing more on play. Consumers can purchase the Napper bag at Kipkep and in selected stores.
